Air Aces (Bally, 1975)

Quick strategy synopsis

The drop targets are the most direct way to increase bonus, but they're also very dangerous, so shoot up the sides of the table to get bonus advances from the lit bumper as well. Reaching certain bonus levels lights the top saucers for extra ball and double bonus, and completing the drop targets lights the in lanes for a special.

Shots and table features

Top saucers

Both saucers score 500 points. If the bonus has reached a predetermined level (typically 8,000 by default), the left saucer will be lit for an extra ball, and the right saucer will be lit for 2x bonus.

Bumpers

One of the two bumpers will always be lit. Any 10-point switch will alternate which of the two bumpers is lit. Unlit bumpers score 10 points (therefore turning themselves on), and lit bumpers score 100 points plus a bonus advance.

Drop target 9-bank

Each target down scores 500 points and a bonus advance. Completing the entire 9-bank scores 5,000 points and 5 bonus advance, resets the bank, and lights both in lanes for a special. Be mindful of how shooting these drop targets with the upper flippers can lead to drains down the opposite out lane.

Bottom of the table

Air Aces has a conventional in/out lane setup. Out lanes score 1,000 points. In lanes score 500 points. The in lanes are both lit for a special by completing the drop targets.

Bonus and bonus multiplier

Bonus is advanced by the lit bumper, by individual drop targets, and 5 times by completing the drop target bank. Reaching a predetermined bonus level (default 8,000, can be 4,000-13,000) lights the top saucers for extra ball and 2x bonus. Max bonus is 2x 29,000 = 58,000 points, but this is very difficult to achieve.
